I look at Japanese philosophy and religion in terms of their history and evolution from the Axial Age through to the age of modernity. I am particularly interested in how the various ideologies, philosophies, and religions of Japan evolved through their exposure to each other. I feel that looking at the specific Japanese history of such philosophical clashes unearths patterns and dynamics that have characterized, in most curious ways, the Axial Age and modernization experiences of traditions elsewhere.
To help me navigate through the history of Japanese philosophy and religion in this way, I critically engage with the philosophers Toshihiko Izutu, D.T. Suzuki, and Hajime Tanabe, among others.
